STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN?

One of the biggest projects the club will carry out this year will be the replacement of the two sets of stairs that go up to the clubhouse. The inside of the club itself may be going through a seismic transformation but the stairs are in need of replacement, having taken a battering every time the Severn has breeched its banks and lapped halfway up the club.

The first flight of stairs to the clubhouse were replaced at the beginning of May, with a smart set of metal ones replacing the rotten wooden ones. It's hoped that the second set will be replaced soon too but it all comes down to money, as one set costs in excess of £3000 to replace.

We have applied for a couple of grants to help, but, unfortunately, applications made at the start of the year to McPhillips Community Grant and to Severn Trent Community Fund, were rejected.

COUNTY HANDICAP COMPETITION

Despite the forecast, we were lucky with the weather and the rain only set in towards the end of a very long day. With 92 competitors taking part, the final eventually started just after 8pm! However, it was worth it as the takings on the day boosted the club's bank account - something needed after the heavy expense of the new staircase.

There was superb help from a small number of volunteers. They turned up to cook and serve food, run the bar, collect glasses and rubbish, wash/clear up, and help with the competition administration. Rich Jones and John Griffiths were at the club at 7am, mowing and preparing the greens for the competition. Hugh Ashworth also cleared an area at the far end of green one, where the public could stand and watch the games from the Quarry path. Another good advert for the club!

The next competition is the Junior competition on the 8th of June. 48 competitors and their families are expected so more help is needed. Details to follow.

WE NEED YOUR HELP!

The number of volunteers who work tirelessly to keep the club going, is very, very small, with only a handful of members helping to make the club the thriving place it is today. On Monday, 17th March, there will be another cleaning session at the club.  This time wellies and anyone with a power hose will be welcome as the plan is to clean the ground floor.  Please bring a facial mask if you want as you know that the filth on the floor is not just silt from the river!! If the weather permits there will be work around the grounds to be done as well. Start time is 10am.

There's always so much to do to keep the place looking as good as it does, and to keep funds coming in - from maintenance of the building and grounds, gardening, organising events, helping on the bar - the list is endless. If you have any spare time that you can offer to your club, please email lesley.osbc@btinternet. It doesn't have to be a regular arrangement - just now and then will help enormously.

RECENT FUNDRAISING

OSBC’s President, John Fannin, very generously donated one of the garden seats that he builds (and sells), for a secret auction. Members were asked to submit sealed bids for the seat, offering an amount they would like to pay for it, and the highest bid was revealed at the recent Quiz Night on the 10th of May. All of the proceeds went to the club.

The quiz itself was also very successful in raising funds, as well as being a well-attended and enjoyable night out for guests. The total raised (including the bid for the bench) was £1,105.

Thanks go to the organisers.
